Tips for Tough Times: Do It!
Do you sometimes feel like a tetherball—battered about by too much to do, too many demands, too little control?
When that happens, it’s easy to lose momentum and let energy drain away. You become dead weight, lifeless at the end of that tether. Motion seems impossible.
The cure may be simpler than you think since the disease (and I do mean dis-ease) is often the result of your own avoidance: Somewhere on your to-do list is an item that weighs you down because you simply don’t want to do it. It may, in fact, fill you with such dread that you refuse to acknowledge its existence and push it from your mind when it threatens to burst into awareness. You burn energy in avoidance.
The first step towards regaining your momentum is to recognize and accept whatever that dreaded item is. It’s most likely a much-needed task you’ve put off because you lack the confidence, knowledge, skill, or money to perform the task. Nevertheless, tackle that item first. Either do
it, make concrete plans for near-future completion, or—if resources are lacking—figure out how to live happily without it. You’ll be surprised at how much energy you’ll recoup once you’ve handled a dreaded “to do.”
Procrastination makes a huge issue out of what may turn out to be quite manageable. The good news is that having made it so immense with your delaying tactics, you’ll be surprised at how simply you can manage the task. And having freed yourself from inertia, life will look lighter.
